FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHICAGO, Illinois - Helix Interactive today officially announced Divvy for iPhone, an application that eliminates the hassle of splitting restaurant checks by allowing users to simply snap a photo of the bill, drag each item to the person who ordered it, and see how much each guest owes. “We put a lot of effort into making the whole process quick and painless,” said co-author Joe VanDeventer. “Divvy automatically reads the prices off of your receipt, so you don't have to awkwardly type each price into your phone.”
The bill is split by dragging each item on the receipt photo to the guest or guests that ordered that item. “We wanted to make using Divvy feel like you could magically touch and manipulate items on your physical receipt,” said co-author Greg Dhuse. “As you drag items on the screen to split them among guests, Divvy is busy doing the math and updating everyone's subtotal and tip amount.” Users are able to personalize the app by using pictures of friends — either taken at the table or from the contact list on their phones.
Toque Magazine recently announced Divvy as a finalist in the Best Innovation and Best Utility categories of their 2012 Food App Awards. Steve Cooper, reviewer at Toque Magazine, said, “This is the coolest and most useful bill splitter I've ever used — the type of app that will make me wonder a year from now how I ever figured out a restaurant check with just a calculator.”
Under the hood, Divvy is built on state-of-the-art Optical Character Recognition technology researched and developed by Helix Interactive, a Chicago company. “Performing high-accuracy character recognition on mobile devices is challenging for a number of reasons,” said Dhuse. “We set out to solve this problem for printed receipts, and over the course of two years built an engine that can be used in the future for other applications as well, such as mobile payments.”
Divvy soft launched this fall and is available for purchase in the iTunes store, on sale for $0.99 for a limited time: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/divvy/id560503890?mt=8
